Hi Friends, A few years ago, I was asked to be the A1 for a wrestling show to be shot in India! For those who don't know what an A1 is, in the USA, the Chief Audio Engineer on a television show is called the A1. This wrestling show was to be telecast on a General Entertainment Channel in India and the Director of the show as well as many of the wrestlers were coming over from the USA. I had never mixed a wrestling show in my life! I imagined there would be two or three commentators, some in-ring announcers and the wrestlers fighting it out in the ring. So this time, I thought, I will chat with my friend Anuj Mathur, who is a very sought after Film Re-Recording Engineer at YRF Studios, and get him to talk about Film Mixing. In 2001, I embarked on a brief stint as an in-house audio engineer with a channel that had just unveiled two state-of-the-art studios in Mumbai, dedicated primarily to mixing promos. These studios were equipped with cutting-edge Fairlight MFX3 plus systems. For those unfamiliar with Fairlight, a brief historical backdrop is in order. Two visionary Australian engineers initially set out to create a synthesiser capable of generating any sound, but their efforts ultimately led to the birth of the world's first sampler, known as the Fairlight CMI. Upon its launch in 1971, it revolutionised music production. In 1989, Fairlight ESP (Electric Sound and Picture) was established to produce products exclusively for the post-production market. Fairlight ESP developed standalone DAWs (the MFX systems) tailored for audio post-production in video and film.
