#13   -   Rediscovering Fairlight! In 2001, I embarked on a brief stint as an in-house audio engineer with a channel that had just unveiled two state-of-the-art studios in Mumbai, dedicated primarily to mixing promos. These studios were equipped with cutting-edge Fairlight MFX3 plus systems. For those unfamiliar with Fairlight, a brief historical backdrop is in order. Two visionary Australian engineers initially set out to create a synthesiser capable of generating any sound, but their efforts ultimately led to the birth of the world's first sampler, known as the Fairlight CMI. Upon its launch in 1971, it revolutionised music production. In 1989, Fairlight ESP (Electric Sound and Picture) was established to produce products exclusively for the post-production market. Fairlight ESP developed standalone DAWs (the MFX systems) tailored for audio post-production in video and film. These systems found widespread use by esteemed entities like NHK in Japan, BBC, NBC, Skywalker...

#12 - A CHAT WITH FILM RE-RECORDING ENGINEER, ANUJ MATHUR! I've always been writing about Production Sound Mixing. So this time, I thought, I will chat with my friend Anuj Mathur, who is a very sought after Film Re-Recording Engineer at YRF Studios, and get him to talk about Film Mixing. Hi Anuj, tell us a bit about yourself - your background, your training and your journey into Re-Recording for films. I graduated from FTII in 1987, and started my career with the movie Chandni, (a Yash Chopra film) as an Assistant to Vasant Mudliar, who was the sound designer. Due to his ill health, he later on handed over the baton to me. Since then, I've been doing most of the Yash Raj Films as a Sound designer. In 2003-04, the thought of a studio model for Yash Raj came in. Though Yash ji had been asking me for a recording studio since the time of Lamhe (1993-94), I always used to submit a proposal to him saying it's not a viable proposition. And he used to get upset.  Basically he wante...

Recently, I  went abroad to shoot a feature film in the desert and spent close to 60 days out there. As the shoot progressed, I kept making notes about the shoot - especially of things that were not going as expected, and what I would do, if given a similar chance again.  Below are some tips / suggestions / observations that I thought of sharing on my blog.  For any shoot that you go to, preparation is the key to having a good and satisfying  outcome. Especially when going away from your city, or going to a foreign country.  Plan … Anticipate … Prepare … A good sound team is one that is well prepared for any eventuality. No matter how much you plan, things will change … that is the nature of filmmaking. And the better prepared you are for any change that happens, the better your work will be. If you accept this one fact, you will not feel distraught when things change midway in a shoot. Call sheet may say something, but on set, things may change at any time, and...
